Kharif Crop - Maize

Farming is hard work. This has been true since prehistoric man first broke ground and planted crops. Farming is not like maintaining a garden , where you can monitor each plant individually and respond to developing issues.

kharif Crops: 

The crops which are shown in the rainy season are called kharif crop. The rainy season in India is generally from June to September. Paddy , Maize ,soyabean,cotton, groundnut etc.

In India Maize is the most important food crop after rice and wheat.

karnatak(15%) is the largest state for the maize cultivation by Rajasthan(13%) and Madhya Pradesh(10%).

Production of maize

Maize is mainly down directly through seed by using different methods of tillage and established. Recently, resource conservation technologies (RCTs) namely zero tillage,minimum tillage, surface reading etc. had came in practice in various Maize based cropping system and are cost effective and environment friendly.

Maize needs 450 to 600mm of water per season ,which is mainly acquired from the soil moisture reserves. About 15,0kg of grain are produced for each millimeter of water consumed . At maturity, each plant will have consumed 250ml of water . The total leaf area at maturity may exceed one square meter per plant .

 Management of maize

The maize plant depends largely on nature to shape its growth , development and yield. However a farmer can manipulate the environment by managing factors such as cultivar choice ,soil tillage , crop rotation, fertilisation, irrigation and pest control.
